About

Innokenty Annensky, born in Omsk, Siberia, is a major figure of the Silver Age of Russian poetry. As director of the Nicholas Gymnasium in Tsarskoye Selo, he taught Nikolai Gumilev. His only collection published during his lifetime, 'Quiet Songs' (1904), appeared under the pseudonym Nic. T-o. His most celebrated work, 'The Cypress Chest', was published posthumously in 1910. Annensky is also noted for his complete translations of Euripides' tragedies and his critical essays. Though often overlooked by his Symbolist contemporaries, he deeply influenced the Acmeist poets, notably Anna Akhmatova, who considered him her teacher.
