About

Yevgeny Baratynsky (1800-1844) was a major Russian poet of the Golden Age of Russian poetry. Born into an aristocratic family, he was expelled from the Page Corps at 15 and served as a private in Finland, whose landscapes influenced his work. A member of Pushkin's circle, he was hailed as Russia's finest elegiac poet. His philosophical poetry, classical and concise, explores disillusionment, mortality, and alienation in the industrial age. His most important collection, 'Sumerki' (1842), was long neglected before being rediscovered by the Russian Symbolists.
