About
Hubertine Auclert (1848-1914) was a French feminist activist, considered the first suffragist in her country. In 1876, she founded the Society for Women's Rights, the first French organization demanding women's right to vote. She created and edited the newspaper La Citoyenne (1881-1891), helping to popularize the terms 'feminist' and 'feminism'. She carried out spectacular actions: a tax strike in 1880, breaking a ballot box in 1908, and a symbolic candidacy in 1910. Her stay in Algeria (1888-1892) led her to document the condition of Arab women and draw parallels between sexism and colonial racism.
