Hilary Mantel was a British novelist born on 6 July 1952 in Glossop, Derbyshire, and died on 22 September 2022. She studied law at the London School of Economics and the University of Sheffield. Her first novel, Every Day Is Mother's Day, was published in 1985. She lived in Botswana (1977–1982) and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (1982–mid-1980s), experiences that informed several of her books. She was the first woman to win the Booker Prize twice, for Wolf Hall (2009) and Bring Up the Bodies (2012), the first two volumes of her trilogy on Thomas Cromwell, completed with The Mirror & the Light (2020).
