About
Hervé Bazin, born Jean-Pierre-Marie Hervé-Bazin, was a French writer born in Angers in 1911. He achieved great success with his autobiographical novel Vipère au poing (1948), depicting a child's struggle against his tyrannical mother, nicknamed Folcoche. A member of the Académie Goncourt from 1958, he became its president in 1973, modernizing the prize and opening it to Francophone literature. His work, marked by revolt and humanism, includes novels like La Tête contre les murs (1949) and essays. He received the Lenin Peace Prize in 1979. He died in Angers in 1996.
