Henri Lefebvre (1901-1991) was a French philosopher and sociologist, a major figure in 20th-century critical thought. Born in Hagetmau, he studied at the Sorbonne and joined the French Communist Party in 1928, from which he was expelled in 1958 for his heterodox positions. After various jobs, he entered the CNRS in 1948 and became a professor at Strasbourg and then Nanterre, where he influenced the May 1968 movement.
