About
Henri Fayol (1841-1925) was a French engineer and industrialist, considered one of the founders of modern management. Born in Constantinople, he entered the École des Mines de Saint-Étienne in 1858 and began his career as a mining engineer at the Compagnie de Commentry-Fourchambault-Decazeville in 1860. Appointed managing director in 1888, he turned around the struggling company and made it one of the largest industrial groups in Europe. In 1916, he published 'Administration industrielle et générale', a seminal work defining management functions and principles. After retiring in 1918, he promoted management education and founded the Centre d'études administratives in Paris.
