Guillermo del Toro is a Mexican filmmaker born in Guadalajara in 1964. He began as a special effects makeup artist before directing his first feature, Cronos (1993), which won a prize at Cannes. He is known for his fantasy and horror films, blending fairy tales with dark realism. He won the Academy Award for Best Director and Best Picture for The Shape of Water (2017), after previously being recognized for Pan's Labyrinth (2006). He is also the author of the novel trilogy The Strain and creator of television series. He is considered one of the most influential filmmakers of his generation.
