About
Guillaume de Lorris, a 13th-century French poet, authored the first part of the Roman de la Rose, written around 1225-1230. Little is known of his life, except that he hailed from Lorris, near Orléans. His work, an allegorical dream about courtly love, remained unfinished. About forty years later, Jean de Meun continued it, and the whole became one of the most widely copied vernacular poems of the Middle Ages, influencing writers such as Chaucer and Dante.
