About

Grazia Deledda, born in Nuoro, Sardinia, had limited formal schooling but educated herself through reading. She published her first short story at 13 and her first novel in 1892. Her work, rooted in rural and patriarchal Sardinia, explores themes of sin, fate, and moral conflict in the Verismo tradition. Her novel Elias Portolu (1903) brought her fame, and Canne al vento (1913) is considered her masterpiece. In 1926, she became the first Italian woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.
