About

Gösta Mittag-Leffler (1846–1927) was a Swedish mathematician and a leading figure in complex analysis. After earning his doctorate at Uppsala in 1872, he studied in Paris, Göttingen, and Berlin, where he worked with Karl Weierstrass. A professor at Helsinki and later Stockholm, he is best known for the Mittag-Leffler theorem on meromorphic functions. Founder of the journal Acta Mathematica in 1882, he played a key role in the career of Sofia Kovalevskaya and in the recognition of Marie Curie. He bequeathed his villa and fortune to establish the Mittag-Leffler Institute, a research center in pure mathematics.
