About
Giuseppe Ungaretti was a major Italian poet of the 20th century and the founder of Hermeticism. Born in Alexandria, Egypt, to Italian parents, he moved to Paris in 1912, where he frequented avant-garde circles. A volunteer during World War I, he wrote his first poems in the trenches. His work, marked by a search for essentiality, explores themes of memory, suffering, and the human condition. He also taught Italian literature in Brazil and Rome and translated major foreign authors.
