About

Gheorghe Zamfir, born April 6, 1941 in Găești, is a Romanian musician virtuoso of the pan flute (nai). He studied at the Dinu Lipatti Musical High School with Fănică Luca, then at the Ciprian Porumbescu Conservatory, earning degrees in pedagogy (1966) and choir/orchestra conducting (1968). He invented an expanded pan flute with 20-30 pipes and created four registers (soprano, alto, tenor, bass). Discovered by Swiss ethnomusicologist Marcel Cellier in 1969, he enjoyed an international career. His recording of 'Doina de Jale' reached No. 4 in the UK in 1976, and 'The Lonely Shepherd' (1977) became a worldwide hit, used in the film Kill Bill (2004). He has sold over 120 million albums and received numerous distinctions.
