About
Gérard Genette, born in Paris in 1930, is a major figure in French literary criticism. A graduate of the École Normale Supérieure, he taught at the Sorbonne and then at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales. Co-founder of the journal Poétique in 1970, he developed a structural theory of narrative, notably in Figures III (1972) and Palimpsests (1982). His concepts of paratext and transtextuality have profoundly influenced narratology. He died in 2018.
