About
Georges Bernanos, born in Paris in 1888, was a French Catholic writer. A volunteer during World War I, he published his first novel, Under the Sun of Satan, in 1926. His work explores themes of evil, grace, and priesthood. The Diary of a Country Priest (1936) won the Grand Prix du roman de l'Académie française. As a polemicist, he denounced Francoist atrocities in Les Grands Cimetières sous la lune (1938). Exiled in Brazil from 1938 to 1945, he supported Free France. He died in 1948 in Neuilly-sur-Seine.
