George Raymond Richard Martin, born September 20, 1948, in Bayonne, New Jersey, is an American writer and screenwriter. Graduating in journalism from Northwestern University, he began his career with science fiction short stories in the 1970s. He is best known for his epic fantasy saga A Song of Ice and Fire, adapted by HBO into the series Game of Thrones. He also created the Wild Cards anthology series and worked in television. His work blends fantasy, horror, and science fiction, earning him numerous awards, including several Hugo and Nebula awards.
