Herbert Norman Schwarzkopf Jr., born August 22, 1934, in Trenton, New Jersey, and died December 27, 2012, in Tampa, Florida, was a four-star general in the U.S. Army. A 1956 West Point graduate, he served two tours in Vietnam, earning multiple decorations. He commanded U.S. Central Command from 1988 to 1991 and led the international coalition during the Gulf War, orchestrating Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. His retirement in 1992 was followed by the publication of his bestselling autobiography.
