About

Gaston Leroux, born in Paris in 1868, studied law before becoming a legal columnist and foreign correspondent for L'Écho de Paris and then Le Matin. He covered the 1905 Russian Revolution and the Dreyfus trial. In 1907, he turned to fiction and created the character Rouletabille in The Mystery of the Yellow Room. His novel The Phantom of the Opera (1910) gained worldwide fame. He co-founded the Société des Cinéromans in 1918 and died in Nice in 1927.
