Friedrich Engels was a German philosopher and political theorist, best known as the closest collaborator of Karl Marx. Born in Barmen (now Wuppertal) into a textile manufacturing family, he left secondary school early to work in business while privately studying liberal and revolutionary ideas. His meeting with Marx in 1844 marked the beginning of a lifelong friendship and intellectual partnership. Engels authored 'The Condition of the Working Class in England' (1845) and co-authored 'The Communist Manifesto' (1848). After Marx's death, he edited Volumes II and III of 'Das Kapital' and published influential works such as 'The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State' (1884). He died in London in 1895.
