Fred Vargas, born Frédérique Audoin-Rouzeau on June 7, 1957 in Paris, is a French archaeozoologist and novelist. She earned a PhD in history from the Sorbonne and worked as a researcher at the CNRS from 1988, specializing in the study of plague epidemics. Alongside her scientific career, she became a major figure in French crime fiction with her series featuring Commissaire Jean-Baptiste Adamsberg, which began with 'The Blue Circles Man' (1991). Her work, translated into some forty languages, has received numerous awards, including the CWA International Dagger four times and the Princess of Asturias Award in 2018.
