About

Philippe François Nazaire Fabre, known as Fabre d'Églantine, was born in Carcassonne in 1750. A provincial actor, he settled in Paris and became known as a playwright. His most famous play, Le Philinte de Molière (1790), was a great success. Committed to the Revolution, he was elected to the National Convention, voted for the death of Louis XVI, and supported radical measures. He also invented the names of the months of the Republican calendar. Close to Danton, he was arrested for corruption and guillotined in 1794. He is credited with the children's song "Il pleut, il pleut, bergère".
