About
Eustache Deschamps, known as Morel, was a French poet born around 1340 in Vertus, Champagne, and died around 1406. A student of Guillaume de Machaut, he studied law at Orléans before entering the service of King Charles V as a diplomatic messenger. He became huissier d'armes in 1372, then bailli of Valois and Senlis. A prolific poet, he composed about 1,500 pieces, including over 1,000 ballades. His treatise L'Art de dictier (1392) is the first French work on versification. He also wrote the Miroir de mariage, an unfinished satire. His work, rediscovered in the 19th century, influenced Charles d'Orléans and François Villon.
