Emmanuel Todd, born May 16, 1951 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, is a French historian, anthropologist, demographer and essayist. A graduate of Sciences Po Paris, he earned a PhD in history from the University of Cambridge in 1976. A researcher at INED from 1984 to 2017, he is known for his theory of family systems, which links family structures to political and religious ideologies. He predicted the collapse of the USSR as early as 1976 in The Final Fall. Author of numerous essays, including After the Empire (2002) and The Defeat of the West (2024), he is considered a heterodox thinker.
