About
Emilia Pardo Bazán (1851-1921) was a major Spanish writer, born in A Coruña into a noble family. She introduced French Naturalism to Spain with her polemical essay La cuestión palpitante (1883). Her novel Los pazos de Ulloa (1886) and its sequel La madre naturaleza (1887) are landmarks of Spanish Naturalist fiction. A pioneering feminist, she founded the Biblioteca de la Mujer in 1892 and was the first woman to hold a university chair in Spain (1916). Despite her importance, she was denied admission to the Royal Spanish Academy three times because of her sex.
