About

Elie Wiesel was born in Sighet, Transylvania, in 1928. Deported to Auschwitz in 1944, he survived the Holocaust and settled in France after the war. His major testimony, Night (1958), became a classic of Holocaust literature. A professor at Boston University, he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986 for his fight against indifference and injustice. He founded the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity and played a key role in establishing the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. He died in New York in 2016.
