Yegor Gaidar, born March 19, 1956, in Moscow and died December 16, 2009, was a Russian economist and politician. He graduated from Moscow State University and earned a doctorate in economics in 1987. In 1991, he was appointed Deputy Chairman of the Government of the RSFSR and Minister of Economy and Finance. He was the architect of post-Soviet market reforms, known as 'shock therapy', launched in January 1992. He served as Acting Prime Minister from June to December 1992. He founded the Institute for the Economy in Transition, which now bears his name. He was also a member of the State Duma and co-founded the Union of Right Forces party. He authored several books on economics and history.
