Eddie Murphy, born April 3, 1961, in Brooklyn, New York, is an American actor and comedian. He rose to fame in 1980 as a cast member of Saturday Night Live. His film debut in 48 Hrs. (1982) earned him a Golden Globe nomination. He achieved massive success with Beverly Hills Cop (1984), the highest-grossing film of that year. He won a Grammy for his comedy album Eddie Murphy: Comedian (1983) and his stand-up film Raw (1987) is the highest-grossing of its kind. He was Oscar-nominated for Dreamgirls (2006) and voiced Donkey in the Shrek franchise. He has received numerous honors, including the Mark Twain Prize (2015), an Emmy (2020), and the Cecil B. DeMille Award (2023).
