About
Dubravka Ugrešić, born in 1949 in Kutina (Yugoslavia) and died in 2023 in Amsterdam, was a Croatian writer. After studying comparative literature and Russian in Zagreb, she taught at the Institute of Literary Theory. Her novel *Štefica Cvek* (1981) brought her recognition, and *Fording the Stream of Consciousness* (1988) won the NIN Award. Opposed to nationalism during the Yugoslav wars, she was targeted and left Croatia in 1993. Her work explores exile, memory, and loss, with novels such as *The Museum of Unconditional Surrender* (1998) and *The Ministry of Pain* (2005). She received numerous awards, including the Neustadt in 2016.
