Joyce Brothers, born Joyce Diane Bauer in New York City, was an American psychologist and a pioneer in media psychology. After earning degrees from Cornell (1947) and Columbia (Ph.D. 1953), she gained fame in 1955 by winning the top prize of $64,000 on the quiz show 'The $64,000 Question,' with boxing as her expert topic. In 1958, she launched her first television advice program, becoming the first television psychologist. She wrote a monthly column for Good Housekeeping for nearly 40 years and a syndicated newspaper column carried by over 300 papers. Author of several bestsellers, she appeared nearly 100 times on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and received a Presidential Citation from the American Psychological Association.
