David Maria Sassoli, born on 30 May 1956 in Florence and died on 11 January 2022 in Aviano, was an Italian journalist and politician. After studying political science, he became a professional journalist in 1986, working for Il Giorno and then for RAI, where he served as special correspondent and anchor for TG1. Elected as a Member of the European Parliament in 2009 for the Democratic Party, he was Vice-President of the European Parliament from 2014 to 2019, then President of that institution from 2019 until his death. His presidency was marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, during which he modernized the Parliament's working methods.
