Daniel Pennac, real name Daniel Pennacchioni, is a French writer born on December 1, 1944, in Casablanca. After studying literature in Nice, he worked as a schoolteacher from 1969 to 1995, specializing in struggling students. His first novel, Au bonheur des ogres (1985), launched the Malaussène saga, a bestselling comic crime series set in Belleville. His essay Comme un roman (1992) formulated the 'inalienable rights of the reader'. He received the Prix Renaudot in 2007 for Chagrin d'école, an autobiographical essay on academic failure. Author of children's books, including Cabot-Caboche and L'œil du loup, he is translated into more than thirty languages and lives in Paris.
