About

Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, was born on July 6, 1935, in Taktser, northeastern Tibet. Recognized at age two as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama, he began his monastic education at six. In 1950, he assumed political authority over Tibet but went into exile in India in 1959 after a failed uprising against Chinese rule. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for his non-violent struggle. Author of over 110 books, he retired from political leadership in 2011, remaining the spiritual head of Tibetan Buddhism.
