Clive Barker is an English author, film director, and visual artist, born on October 5, 1952, in Liverpool. After studying English and Philosophy at the University of Liverpool, he began his career as a playwright and director in London's fringe theatre. He achieved breakthrough with the short story collection *Books of Blood* (1984), which won the World Fantasy Award and British Fantasy Award. His major novels include *Weaveworld* (1987), *Imajica* (1991), and *Sacrament* (1996). His novella *The Hellbound Heart* (1986) became the basis for his directorial debut film *Hellraiser* (1987), followed by *Nightbreed* (1990) and *Lord of Illusions* (1995). He is also the creator of the *Abarat* young-adult fantasy series.
