About

Chinmoy Kumar Ghose, born on August 27, 1931, in Shakpura, East Bengal, British India (now Bangladesh), was the youngest of seven children. At age 12, he entered the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry, where he spent 20 years in spiritual practice. In 1964, he moved to New York City to teach meditation and spiritual philosophy internationally. He founded over 100 meditation centers in about 60 countries, never charging fees for his teachings. From 1970, he led twice-weekly peace meditations at the United Nations, at the invitation of Secretary-General U Thant. A prolific writer and poet, he published nearly 1,600 books, including over 120,000 poems, composed over 21,000 devotional songs, and created over 140,000 abstract paintings.
