Charles Péguy was born in Orléans in 1873 into a modest family. A brilliant student, he entered the École Normale Supérieure in 1894. A socialist and Dreyfusard, he founded the Cahiers de la Quinzaine in 1900, an influential review where he published his own works and those of others. His poetry, marked by faith and commitment, culminated with Ève (1913). A lieutenant during World War I, he was killed in action in 1914.
