Charles Nodier, born on April 29, 1780 in Besançon and died on January 27, 1844 in Paris, was a French writer and a major figure of Romanticism. A precursor of the fantastic tale, he introduced Hoffmann's works to France. His salon at the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal, the Cénacle, gathered young Romantics such as Victor Hugo and Alfred de Musset. Author of Smarra, Trilby and La Fée aux miettes, he was elected to the Académie française in 1833.
