About
Charles Cros (1842-1888) was a French poet and inventor. He is known for depositing in 1877 a sealed note describing the paléophone, a method for recording and reproducing sound, before Edison's announcement of the phonograph. He also worked on color photography and proposed ideas for communicating with planets. In literature, he published 'Le Coffret de santal' in 1873, a collection praised by Verlaine. Co-founder of the Chat Noir cabaret, he was associated with Symbolist and Decadent circles.
