Carroll Baker, born Karolina Piekarski on May 28, 1931 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, is an American actress. Trained at the Actors Studio, she rose to fame in 1956 with the title role in Elia Kazan's Baby Doll, earning an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe for New Star of the Year. She appeared in Giant (1956), The Big Country (1958), How the West Was Won (1962), and Harlow (1965). In the late 1960s, she moved to Italy and starred in numerous giallo thrillers. Returning to the U.S., she took on character roles in Star 80 (1983), Ironweed (1987), Kindergarten Cop (1990), and The Game (1997). She also authored an autobiography and two novels. She retired in 2003 after a career spanning over 80 roles.
