About

Carlos Castañeda, born in Peru in 1925, emigrated to the United States in 1951 and earned a Ph.D. in anthropology from UCLA in 1973. His first book, *The Teachings of Don Juan* (1968), achieved international success and launched a series of twelve books describing his apprenticeship with a Yaqui shaman named Don Juan Matus. Although his writings were influential in the New Age movement, scholars later questioned their ethnographic authenticity. Castañeda withdrew from public life in 1973 and died in 1998 in Los Angeles.
