Carles Puigdemont (born 1962 in Amer, Catalonia) is a Catalan politician and journalist. He served as mayor of Girona (2011-2016) and president of the Government of Catalonia from January to October 2017, when he was dismissed by the Spanish government after the unilateral declaration of independence. In exile in Belgium since 2017, he was elected MEP in 2019. He previously directed the newspaper El Punt and founded the Catalan News Agency.
