About

Camilo Castelo Branco, born in Lisbon in 1825, was one of the most prolific Portuguese writers of the 19th century, with over 260 published works. Orphaned, he was raised by aunts in Trás-os-Montes. He studied medicine and theology without earning a degree. In 1859, his affair with married Ana Plácido led to imprisonment, where he wrote his masterpiece, Amor de Perdição (1862). He was elected to the Royal Academy of Sciences of Lisbon in 1856 and received the title of viscount in 1885. His later years were darkened by illness and financial hardship; he committed suicide in 1890.
