C. J. Cherryh, born Carolyn Janice Cherry in 1942 in St. Louis, Missouri, is an American science fiction and fantasy writer. She grew up in Lawton, Oklahoma, and studied Latin and Greek, earning a master's degree from Johns Hopkins University. She taught classics and ancient history before turning to writing. Her first novel, Gate of Ivrel, was published in 1976. She is known for her complex universes, including the Alliance-Union universe and the Foreigner series. Winner of three Hugo Awards, she was named a Grand Master by SFWA in 2016.
