Oliver Burgess Meredith, born November 16, 1907, in Cleveland, Ohio, and died September 9, 1997, in Malibu, California, was an American actor, director, writer, and producer. His career spanned nearly seven decades across stage, film, and television. He made his Broadway debut in 1930 and had his breakthrough role in Winterset (1935). He starred as George Milton in the film adaptation of Of Mice and Men (1939). During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Forces. After a difficult period in the 1950s, he made a comeback in the 1960s, notably as the Penguin in the Batman TV series. He received two Academy Award nominations for The Day of the Locust (1975) and Rocky (1976).
