Bülent Ecevit, born May 28, 1925 in Istanbul and died November 5, 2006 in Ankara, was a major figure in Turkish politics. He served five terms as Prime Minister (1974, 1977, 1978-1979, 1999-2002) and led the Republican People's Party (CHP) and later the Democratic Left Party (DSP). As Minister of Labour (1961-1965), he legalized the right to strike and collective bargaining. In 1974, he ordered the Turkish military intervention in Cyprus. After the 1980 coup, he was imprisoned and banned from politics, before being rehabilitated by referendum in 1987. His last government (1999-2002) oversaw the capture of Abdullah Öcalan and EU-accession reforms.
