About

Siddhārtha Gautama, known as the Buddha, was born in Lumbinī (present-day Nepal) into a noble family. After renouncing luxury and extreme asceticism, he attained enlightenment at Bodh Gayā at about age 35. He taught for about 45 years across the Gangetic plain, establishing the monastic Saṅgha. His teachings, transmitted orally and later compiled in the Pāli canon, include the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path. He died at Kuśinagar, attaining parinirvāṇa.
