Bruce Fairchild Barton (1886-1967) was an American advertising executive, politician, and author. A graduate of Amherst College in 1907, he co-founded the advertising agency Barton, Durstine & Osborne in 1919, which later became BBDO. He is credited with creating the fictional homemaker Betty Crocker and naming General Motors and General Electric. His book 'The Man Nobody Knows' (1925), which portrayed Jesus as a businessman, was a bestseller. A Republican, he served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1937 to 1941. He is known for popularizing the Salvation Army slogan: 'A man may be down, but he is never out.'
