Billy Wilder, born Samuel Wilder in Galicia (Austria-Hungary), was a major Hollywood director, producer, and screenwriter. Fleeing Nazi Germany in 1933, he started as a screenwriter in Berlin, then Paris, before settling in Hollywood. He became known for sharp comedies and dramas blending cynicism and humanism.
