Bill Murray, born William James Murray on September 21, 1950, in Wilmette, Illinois, is an American actor and comedian. He began with the National Lampoon Radio Hour and rose to fame as a cast member on Saturday Night Live (1977-1980), winning an Emmy for writing. He starred in hit films such as Caddyshack, Ghostbusters, Groundhog Day, and Lost in Translation, for which he received an Academy Award nomination and won a BAFTA and a Golden Globe. He frequently collaborates with directors Wes Anderson and Sofia Coppola. In 2016, he was awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.
