About
Assia Djebar, born Fatima-Zohra Imalayen in Cherchell, was a major figure in Francophone literature. The first Algerian woman admitted to the École Normale Supérieure in Paris, she published her first novel 'La Soif' in 1957. Her work, marked by feminism and postcolonial critique, explores the history and condition of Algerian women. As a filmmaker, she won the International Critics' Prize at the Venice Biennale for 'La Nouba des femmes du Mont Chenoua'. Recipient of the Neustadt Prize in 1996 and the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade in 2000, she was elected to the Académie française in 2005, the first writer from the Maghreb. She taught at several universities, including New York University.
