Art Carney, born Arthur William Matthew Carney on November 4, 1918 in Mount Vernon, New York, and died on November 9, 2003 in Chester, Connecticut, was an American actor and comedian. He began his career as an impressionist and announcer with the Horace Heidt big band orchestra on radio. During World War II, he served in the US Army and was wounded in the leg during the Normandy Invasion, leaving him with a lifelong limp. He is best known for his role as Ed Norton on the classic sitcom The Honeymooners (1955–1956), which earned him five Emmy Awards. He also won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1974 for Harry and Tonto, and originated the role of Felix Unger in Neil Simon's The Odd Couple on Broadway in 1965.
